PJ graduated with a first-class degree in music and performance from the University of Leeds, where he held a scholarship supported by Opera North. He was awarded a BBC Performing Arts Bursary to train as a director at Scottish Opera. In 2015, PJ was listed as ‘one to watch’ by the BBC and has since worked on productions at the Royal Opera House, Glyndebourne, Opera North, Welsh National Opera, Opéra de Lyon, Den Norske Opera, Den Jyske Opera, Garsington Opera and Polish National Opera.
Recent directing credits include Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 for Garsington Opera, the European staged premiere of Madeleine Dring’s Cupboard Love alongside a new production of Vaughan Williams’ Riders to the Sea for Byre Opera, Salome in a concert staging for Opera North, Eugene Onegin for Rhosygilwen, The Cunning Little Vixen for Byre Opera and La Voix Humaine for The Forge. PJ has also worked with Annilese Miskimmon as Associate Director for Billy Budd at Polish National Opera, Warsaw and Jenůfa at Kungliga Operan, Stockholm.
PJ recently directed Europe’s first drive-in opera: a site-specific production at Alexandra Palace of La Bohème for English National Opera. This was also broadcast live on Sky Arts and is currently available to stream through Now TV. Forthcoming new productions include Pelléas et Mélisande (Byre Opera), Brundibar (Opera North) and Parsifal (Opera North).
